Languages spoken in India belong to several language families, the major ones being the Indo-Aryan languages spoken by 78.05% of Indians and the Dravidian languages spoken by 19.64% of Indians. Languages spoken by the remaining 2.31% of the population belong to the Austroasiatic, Sino-ibetan, Tai-Kadai and a few other minor language families and isolates. India has the world’s fourth highest number of languages (427).
Hindi has been derived from Sanskrit, one of the most ancient languages in the world. The Hindi script is known as the Devanagri script. Hindi is the fourth most-spoken first language in the world, after Mandarin, Spanish and English.
Punjabi is an Indo-Aryan language with more than 125 million native speakers in the Indian subcontinent and around the world. There are also important overseas communities of Punjabi speakers, particularly in Canada and the United Kingdom
Gujarati is spoken by more than 46 million people. Most of these reside in the Indian state of Gujarat, though there are significant diaspora communities around the world, especially in the United Kingdom and the United States.
Bengali is spoken by more than 85 million people in India and sizable immigrant communities in the United Kingdom.
